Another goodie sent in by Contributor Robyn Watts, here’s a short, somewhat muddy but listenable recording of WOR-FM as it sounded in the Spring & Summer of 1967. This features a number of people including Newsman Ted Malley reporting WOR-FM News, Murray the K (who announces that WOR-FM is doing block programming, with at different theme each hour) and the great Scott Muni finishing out. There are a few voices we can’t identify and hopefully someone in our listening audience knows who they are.

Does anyone know who the jock or jocks were on the tape between Murray the K and Scott Muni? Before long, Bill Drake moves in, and Muni moves to WNEW-FM as does Roscoe.

Very interesting recording; this is, I assume, pre-Drake, although there is still news at 20 minutes before the hour…not called 20/20 News.

Listen at 2:07; sounds like the dub picked up a stray “cash register” sound effect that was not part of the aircheck.
This is just about as loose a format as I’ve ever heard. (Bill Drake would change that before too long.) Upbeat jingles but low-key personality! Maybe that was the intent; to keep from sounding too much like you-know-who over on the AM side.
The film being advertised after “My Generation” is “Marat/Sade” and I guess they weren’t kidding when they said “suggested for mature audiences”! (By 1967 standards that is)

My first and only non on air jub in New York was as a board op at WOR AM and WOR-FM. Although because I had the last interview ever with Martin Block I was featured on the AM side. I enginerred on FM for Johnny Michaels, Dick Birch, Scott Muni, Murry the K, John Zacherly and Rosco on FM. Rosco had me on as a guest when I was 18. Ted Malley was actually one of he left over Mutual announcers on the AM side. Art Wonder was the PD and I loved that Jingle package. ONe of the highlights I remember is when Murry the Eay sent me down to the front door to let in John Lennon for an interview.
Jay, WOR-FM was doing 20-20 News even before Drake took over programming the station. The original jingle package had an intro for it.
Tony, The first DJ after Murray the K is Jim Lounsbury (a very distinctive voice). Not certain about the two who were joking around on the air before that, but I’m pretty sure one is Johnny Michaels. The other may be Dick Burch. Interesting to hear both Murray and Scott doing oldies segments here, something they were both known for from their previous (AM) stations.

I remember Jim Lounsbury (long-time announcer from WOR-AM/TV) had a show early Saturday mornings and there was always banter between him and Johnny Michaels in between their programs which developed into the “Michaels/Lounsbury Show”
I have always believed that this incarnation of WOR-FM was the best radio station ever!
