In the 1970s, New York’s 95.5 WPLJ was a Rock powerhouse. I have noticed that many seem to thin WPLJ was a hard Rock station in the mid-70s, but it was not. The boundaries of what the station considered Rock, was pretty wide. In addition to what you would consider “Classic Rock, by today’s standards, the station also played Soft Rock artists, like James Taylor, Carol King, Simon & Garfunkel, & Harry Chapin. WPLJ also played some R&B artists, like The Ohio Players, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Temptations, and others. WPLJ even played The Bee Gees. The variety of music was very wide, and New Yorkers seemed to like it, because WPLJ normally came out ahead of it’s main Rock competitor, WNEW-FM. This aircheck features WPLJ’s longtime morning man, Jim Kerr.
