In short, this is part of the airstaff that so many fondly remembered. The boundaries of what WPLJ considered New York’s Best Rock is pretty wide. In this era, the station was not a “Hard Rock” station, but it played many different genres that came under the “Rock & Roll” umbrella, rather than just what is considered Rock today. So on WPLJ, you could hear artists you’d expect to hear, like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Chicago & Jimi Hendrix, along with many soft rock artists of the era, like James Taylor, Harry Chapin, Billy Joel, Chuck Mangione, & Steely Dan. There were even some R&B artists that Rock fans of the era would know, like Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie & The Commodores & The Temptations. Even a few pop songs from artists like The Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Barbara Streisand & Barry Manilow. This blend of music gave WPLJ great numbers in this era.
