100.3 FM New York, WHTZ, Z100

Z100 is celebrating its 6th year as New York’s Number One Hit Music Station, and all sorts of people are congratulating the station including (then) New York Governor Mario Cuomo. We love it when politicians and other celebrities personally voice station liners!

This is Z100 in all of it’s glory, playing ALL the hits with an airstaff that reads like a who’s who of blockbuster jocks. Jo Jo Morales sounds great here, but this is no different than any other day on this station.

Lightly processed and restored to near perfect condition, here’s a three-plus minute scoped listen to one of America’s finest FM CHR stations ever!

  1. What is the first song played on the aircheck, I can never figure out who that is! And seems odd that the Rolling Stones were considered gold music for top 40 in 1989….

    1. Hi William,

The first song was “Sincerely Yours” by Sweet Sensation (went to #14 in the Spring of 1989). And I don’t think it was odd that Z100 was playing The Rolling Stones as they were getting ready to release their “Steel Wheels” album in about another month or two.

Also note the farewell that Jo Jo did to former midday personality Susan Leigh Taylor as she left for similar duties at KIOI/San Fransisco. His parting words of “watching out for earthquakes” would ring true just a few months later when the area was hit by a 6.9 quake on October 17th.
