Rick Shaw is possibly best remembered for his days at 610 KFRC San Francisco. It is likely no coincidence that Shaw was on both stations, as KFRC and WOR-FM were co owned by RKO-General.
This moves right along, and as short as this clip is, you get a feel for the radio station and for Rick Shaw’s talent as a Top 40 deejay. One could definitely look back and feel that Shaw was merely prepping for the essential part he would play in the late 70s and early 80s lineup at the enormous KFRC.

Definitely NOT the Rick Shaw who’s a living legend in South Florida radio. Aside from the name and their love for radio, they have nothing in common.
This Rick Shaw is not to be confused by the living legend of South Florida radio. There’s no comparison; Our Ricky-Ticky has been in our area for 50 years! Can you think of any other top 40 jock who can make that claim?
Guess I am getting older … or old … but this loud, screaming, liner-filled, Drake-void-of-any-personality aircheck … is not for me.

Tony, I agree that the stringency of the Drake format doesn’t allow jocks to be themselves, but the Rick Shaw in Florida never had to do that. I would encourage you to check him out at reelradio.com, where there are several airchecks of his shows. He also hosted “Saturday Hop”, our local version of “American Bandstand”. There are videos on YouTube of him. He was definitely one of a kind. I think you’ll also find his retirement speech from WMXJ there, too.
No, he’s not the Rick Shaw from Florida, but he was no slouch in his own right. This Rick Shaw worked at some great stations, two Big 610’s in KILT in Houston and KFRC. The latter was quite an accomplishment.
one can only wonder… if WOR AM 710 was top 40 instead of on FM… would WABC have been in serious trouble?
