Its said that imitation is the finest form of flattery. In this case, its a re-creation of what was New Year’s Eve programming on The Big 89 WLS Chicago.
I started work on this project back in November, 2015, in hopes of having it finished in time to air on my internet station, HitOldies, on December 31st. But a countdown takes time to both research and put together, just a few elements at a time in between work and family commitments. What one hears in this Countdown is a sort of ‘what if’ this was 1979, and we got to hear the countdown in Stereo.
This is simply a labor of love. WLS was an amazing radio station, and the world-class talent heard during the Music Radio years are all legendary. I’m just a jock who listened to and looked up to these radio greats (in awe of their talents), doing a tribute to them and a radio station which a generation of radio people were moved to enter the greatest job field ever known, and one which fully one third of North America listened to at night.
I hope that I am able to re-capture the magic for you who remember WLS. Reserve seven hours to hear this in its entirety. So, for you our Airchexx visitors, people from Chicagoland and the Midwest and fans of WLS MusicRadio 89 all around the world, I humbly present: The WLS Big 89 of 1979!
If you enjoy, please share.
Do you have any Steve Lundy air checks from the time he was at the big 89?
I don’t but I will check my sources.
Funny, I just came across your pod cast.. I just purchased an open reel tape deck so I could play my old top 89’s from WLS radio. Just happened to find the 1979 tapes first at glorious 1 7/8 IPS. I’m a few ahead t hey were broadcasting live from The local theme park Old Chicago.. I had all the commercials still on the tapes.. Don’t remember how many years I had taped,
