Here’s a short but ever-so-sweet quick check of the late Big Ron O’Brien as captured on tape at CHR WKBQ Q106.5 St. Louis. This is high energy CHR at its best. The station, however, hasn’t been around since 1994 and has gone through half a dozen format changes since this was recorded. It’s so old, in fact, we can’t even find a logo anywhere on the web for this station!

At 3 1/4 minutes long, this won’t take up much of your time. I invite you to take a listen to Big Ron. In case you never heard this fantastic jock, he was literally EVERYWHERE!  His career began at little KBAB Indianola, Iowa and took him on a tour around America to such stations as WCFL Chicago, KFI, KIIS-FM and KKHR Los Angeles, WCAR Detroit, KWK St. Louis, (I believe, on the same frequency), KZDG Denver, WRKO Boston, WOGL and WXYR Philadelphia and WPGC Washington, WXLO and WNBC New York.

The quality of this aircheck is pretty good.  Our contributor obtained most of the Big Ron O’Brien tapes directly from his estate after his passing, so these are original, master tapes that have been digitized for exhibit here.

Hi Steve! I worked w/Big Ron at WKBQ back in 1988/1989 and have plenty of logo stuff that I can scan and send you if you’d like. It was a blast working at this station and especially w/Big Ron. I was a permanent weekender/fill-in but also worked mornings in the Q-Van handing out cash and prizes to listeners I’d pull over on-air with a Q bumper sticker on their car. Thanks for posting this great memory! Scott Andrews
