92.9 Atlanta WZGC Z93

Contributor Jay Sawyer sent this in without comment. From sometime in the 1980s, the old “Z93” CHR station is sampled from the weekend airing of American Top 40 with Kasey Kasem. The voice, we assume, is that of the contributor, doing the Top Hour IDs and the two weather breaks. And that’s all you hear from this less-than-two-minute sample from an era long gone.

This was in late 1986 or early 1987. I was a weekender and had some production duties. I was just a bit too late to work with John Young as PD. I worked under Bob Case as P.D. and in 1988 the station moved from the C&S building downtown to Johnson Ferry Rd North of town. By this time I had moved on.

This was a great station. I know John Young as I am a voting member of the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. I lived in Nashville when John started radio as a teenager on WMAK. Same great voice then as now. I listened to Z93 in the early 70’s when Lee Sommers, Joe Gale (News), Jefferson Stone, Michael Lee Scott, Shotgun Jerry Cook, Bill Wade and Charles Henry were there. And the Top of The Hour ID’s were done by the late Gary Gears. It was a hot, smoking station back then.

Z93 was kicking ass when I worked there. A smoking hot sound! I did afternoon drive as “Shotgun” Jerry Cook. Super tight format and a lot of fun! Tommy Goodwin.
