For a time, Magic Christian was one of the top morning personalities in Boston radio. WVBF was making serious inroads, creeping into the AM station ratings of crosstown WRKO where Dale Dorman was holding court. In a stroke of irony, while WVBF and WRKO duked it out, it was full-service, middle of the road WBZ AM 1030 that held all the ratings marbles!
Here’s a super clean recording of WVBF. In 1975, the station was heading away from Album Rock cuts and becoming far more mainstream Top 40. And listen to those JINGLES! Produced by Heller, these were heard only in a few places, most notably at WVBF but also in New York City at 102 WPIX (101.9, now WFAN-FM).
Harry Chase, heard before Christian, was no slouch, either! Harry was a very capable jock with one hell of a set of pipes! Thankfully, we get to hear BOTH men work their magic, pardon the pun, here at WVBF!
