Thanks again to the massive Robyn Watts collection, the late Don Steele is featured in this 7+ minute scope of K-Earth 101 from sometime in the early 90s, we’re guessing around ’91 or ’92. Charlie Van Dyke’s pipes are lower than ever in the incredible imaging, and the jingles…. well, KRTH has used a variation of nearly the same jingle sing for well over 30 years now so what does that tell ya?
Very few radio stations have had the same format or call letters, especially on FM, and with the exception of a small stretch of time in the early 80s when it was AC, KRTH has been blasting Oldies to Southern California. As of this writing, it still is.
The year is 1992…Don’s first with KRTH. He’d just left CBS-FM, L.A. It was a pairing of Morgan and Steele for the first time since 1974 at K-100.Your comments were correct: the man was brilliant until illness took him from the air in April of 1997. There have been a ton of pretenders, but no one comes close the the REAL Don Steele.
TINA DELGADO IS ALIVE,ALIVE………THE REAL DON STEELE WAS THE BEST JOCK EVER AND YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BOSS BANK BABY……I STILL GET THE ULTIMATE RUSH EVERYTIME I HEAR HIS AIRCHEXX…….KEEP EM COMIN STEVE,,,,GNARLY/SMOKIN….
Is there someway that Don can be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame?
KRTH’s 20th anniversary was ’92…so Charlie Van Dyke’s legal ID nails the year down.
Don’s first day on KRTH was August 4, 1992. And Robert W. Morgan’s was August 20. Since Charlie does a liner promoting him as already on, this would have to be later than that.
I will always be greatful to hear all those DJ’S that made me enjoy my era of radio R&R.
